In the nuclear industry, cement-based materials are extensively used to encapsulate spent ion exchange resins (IERs) before their final disposal in a repository. It is well known that the cement has to be carefully selected to prevent any deleterious expansion of the solidified waste form, but the reasons for this possible expansion are not clearly established. This work aims at filling the gap. The swelling pressure of IERs is first investigated as a function of ions exchange and ionic strength. A previously elaborated capillary electrophoresis (CE) method used for the determination of glyphosate and aminomethylphosphonic acid (AMPA) was slightly modified in order to improve the sensitivity. However, detection limits attained (5 μg mL−1 for glyphosate and 4 μg mL−1 for AMPA) were still not satisfactory for analytical purposes, thus the addition of a preconcentration step before the CE analysis was proposed. Adsorption of Db and its homologues Nb and Ta, and the pseudo-homologue Pa on anion-exchange resin in HF solution

Anion-exchange chromatography of element 105, dubnim (Db), produced in the 206 Cm( 19 F, 5n) 262 Db reaction is investigated together with the homologues Nb and Ta, and the pseudo-homologue Pa in 13.9 M hydrofluoric acid (HF) solution. The distribution coefficient (K d ) of Db on an anion-exchange resin is successfully determined by running cycles of 1702 chromatographic column separations. The result clearly indicates that the adsorption of Db on the resin is significantly different from that of the homologues and that the adsorption of anionic fluoro complexes of these elements decreases in the sequence of Ta ≈ Nb > Db > Pa.

Objective: To determine in vitro free ion concentration in 3 standard artificial enteral feeding formulas following the addition of ion exchange resins. Method: Three standard types of AEF were chosen: Osmolite HN®, Nutrison Standard®, and Isosource Standard®. The ion exchange resins used were: sodium polystyrene sulfonate and calcium polystyrene sulfonate. In a beaker were mixed 100 mL of AEF with 1.5 g or 3 g of ion exchange resins for 48 hours at 37oC. The methanolysis of rapeseed oil catalyzed by commercial styrene-divinylbenzene macroporous acid resins was performed in a batch reactor at 100-140 °C and 10-46 MPa to study the effect of supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO2) on the performances of the process. Reaction temperatures of 120-140 °C were necessary to obtain high enough yields of fatty acid methyl esters. The distribution of Me3PbIV between the anion exchange resin Dowex 1 X 8 and aqueous solutions of NaSCN and KSCN was investigated. In the aqueous phase, up to 3 M thiocyanate concentration, only the formation of the neutral species Me3PbNCS was detected and the related stability constant evaluated. Evidence of formation into the resin phase of the anionic Me3Pb(NCS) species was obtained.

The influence of an ion-exchange resin on the kinetics of hydration of tricalcium silicate

The addition of a finely-ground ion-exchange resin makes it possible to modify the hydration kinetics of C3S pastes. Analyses of the liquid phase in pastes and more dilute suspensions show that the resin exchanges calcium ions for sodium ions very rapidly during the early stage of hydration and therefore the concentration of silica in solution increases. The resin impacts the hydration of C3S by other mechanisms which depends on the resin quantity added. For a high resin quantity, the induction period is very short, but the longer-term hydration is enhanced compared to a reference sample without resin.
